About St. Martha's Baby Project in Salt Lake City

Saint Martha's Baby Project was established in 1987 as a positive response to abortion. Their purpose is to make it possible for women of limited means to keep and care for their newborns.

St. Martha's Baby Project's workroom is located at Holy Cross Ministries of Utah, and many of their layettes are distributed through their social services.

The ministry is a non-denominational, all-volunteer group who values new life.  They continually work, either individually or in groups, anticipating the birth of the next child needing a layette.

At this time, they average approximately 275 layettes each year.  Because of the support from various individuals and groups, they have been able to increase the number of items in each layette.

How They Serve

Saint Martha's Baby Project prepares every day of the year for the birth of a child who could be in desperate need. They feel it is important that new babies and their parents do not feel alone at a very vulnerable time in their lives.

Because we believe in the dignity of each individual and the importance of a positive approach, they lovingly prepare these layettes and provide them, free of charge, without regard to religious preference, race, or ethnicity.

Layettes are given out through many recognized social service agencies in the Salt Lake Valley.

Layettes

The generous layettes contain only brand new items, hand-made or purchased for the newborn, size 3-6 months:

  • Quilt and blanket
  • Receiving blankets
  • Baby afghan
  • Small knit hats
  • Bibs and burp cloths
  • Onesies and sleepers
  • Outfits
  • Socks
  • Heavy sleeper (for winter)
  • Baby wash, lotions, pacifiers
  • Bottles and brush
  • Thermometer
  • Towel and wash cloth
  • Disposable diapers, size 1
  • Wipes
  • Brush and comb set
  • Night light
  • Miscellaneous personal care  items for mothers

Included in the layette is this letter to the new mother:

“We believe that all babies should come into this world loved, and want you to know that someone in this community is thinking of you and the precious new life that you must care for.”

How Can You Help?

The need for layettes continues to increase as more women seek an alternative to abortion.

You can help us by:

  • Cash contributions or financial grants
  • Contributing any of the items included in the layettes.
  • Adopting the St. Martha's Baby Project as your social service project. Some groups have held “baby showers” to provide much needed items.
  • Volunteer to sew, knit, crochet, shop, etc. Most volunteers work from their homes.
